Chapter Fifteen
Since I had nothing on my agenda for the day, I lazed around the house and hung out on the deck. I ate my breakfast out there, hoping to run into the stupid bird. Halfway through my bagel, my phone rang from inside, and I went in to grab it. By the time I came back, the bagel was gone, and Lapis sat in the tree, picking at it with his beak. I debated breaking the no-magic rule and sending just a tiny little bolt of lightning toward him but stopped myself at the last minute. The last thing I needed to do was set the tree on fire, and I had promised Ronan I wouldn't try any more magic until he had a chance to work with me.
I could, however, pluck a nice-sized rock out of one of the planters. I drew my arm back and winged it at him as hard as I could. I was happy to see that my time on the company softball team had paid off. I missed him, but it did knock the bagel off the limb and into the sand below.
I crossed my arms and smirked at him. "I might not have it, but now you won't either. At least not without swallowing a ton of sand."
He tilted his head and gave me the hairy eyeball with his one good eye before he flew away. He squawked in his stupid parrot-y voice as he flew past me. "Hateful witch.â
I snagged another rock out of the planter, and this time, even though he was a moving target, I landed a bullseye. I scrambled for an insult to fling along with it, but he was gone before my brain returned anything. At least today, I felt like I'd leveled the score.
I snagged my coffee from the table and slipped back inside, debating what to do next. The pink on my arms had turned to tan, so I decided to hit the beach for a bit.
It hit me when I picked up my foot to put on my bathing suit bottom that the movement came easily. Usually I had the grace and agility of a pregnant camel, but I got both legs in on the first try without falling over once. Miracle of miracles! When I straightened back up, I wasn't even a little stiff.
I rushed to the bathroom mirror and was disappointed to find the wrinkles still settled in their normal spots. I pushed the skin on my cheeks back a little, then did the same with my jaw. Before Iâd left Rob, I'd been considering a micro facelift. Now that I was living at the beach and interacting with other people, most of whom were older than I was, I found I had no interest in that anymore. I shrugged. Even if my magic only took away the aches and pains, I'd be happy with that.
This time, I pulled three bottles of water from the fridge and stuffed them in my beach bag along with my sunscreen and book.
